The Falls at Wilmington Notch Campground are free to all visitors, but it is recommended that you check in at the campground front desk before starting your hike to the waterfall.

The waterfall is located along an established hiking trail, but the trail can be easily lost due to the lack of ground level plants in that section of the woods. At 75′ the photos of this waterfall do not do justice to its overall size.
The photos were taken well above the crest of the falls, which is where you will find the best view and vantage points.

Hiking to the falls is easy, since all you have to do is travel almost straight back from the campground office and down a steep hill. It takes about 5 minutes to get to the ledges overlooking the fall, although it is a steep climb back up after the visit.

Please take care on the ledges as they are slipperier than they appear. A fall from this height would be devastating.

Aunt Sarah’s Falls is a beautiful 90′ tall waterfall located roadside, a short car ride south of the Watkins Glen State Park main gorge entrance.

This waterfall is one of many roadside waterfalls in the area. During the summer the flow of the waterfall is affected heavily by rainy weather. If you plan to visit this waterfall during the summer months try to plan for sometime after rainy weather, otherwise you may not find much water flowing over its crest.

There is parking right next to the waterfall and other parking across the road. There is also access to a public hiking trail in the lot across the street. The road is a local main route with truck traffic, so please keep this in mind while visiting.

The waterfall’s beauty is not daunted by all the traffic on the road. The spot is very relaxing as is any waterfall.

During Hurricane Katrina video was captured of the water shooting over the crest of the falls almost reaching the road.

Easy access for all

Very dynamic waterfall, depending on the time of year visited

Parking lots are available

There is some litter at times

This waterfall has no actual name and does not seem to appear in any other documentation.

In the past I have written to several local individuals, but no one has been able to answer us back on any information about this set of falls.

These are located on a two lane secondary road, which is paved. After turning onto the road and traveling about 200 yards, you will have to park on the shoulder and walk into the woods to find the creek. From there you will only need to walk upstream a short way to find the main set of waterfalls, while passing other smaller falls and cascades on your way.

The waterfall is about 8′ to 10′ high and has a crest of about 20′. It is in a very beautiful area, filled with many other places to visit.

Be careful not to walk too far upstream as it is posted past the falls.

Easy Hike

Beautiful area to visit

Trails are well kept

Perfect falls to photograph

Information about posted and private property that everyone should know.

…Recently my fiancé and I took a waterfalling excursion to the Hudson Valley Region.
The waterfall in question: Judd Falls.
The location: Cherry Valley.
The limiting factor: Trespassing… Or was it?…

Perspective Two:

Ina Saltz is an example of another land owner that was lucky enough to acquire property with a waterfall on it. Her land is located in a small town in the Hudson Valley Region of New York called Stockport. The waterfall, in part, can be seen from the road/bridge at the front of her property, but there is an even more impressive fall located at the top of her property, hidden from view if you are standing at the road side.

This is a second home for Saltz since her work keeps her in New York City for the most part. She is a published author, an Associate Professor at City College of New York and also holds other positions in many other groups and forums of the art community.

Dig The Falls was lucky enough to be photographing her falls from the road during one of the days that she was taking a break from the hustle and bustle of NYC. She walked right up to us and started a conversation about the falls. Obviously very proud of them she offered to take us up the back portion of her land to see the rest of the falls. What an amazing day!

Since that day Ina has kept in contact with Dig The Falls, further explaining the painstaking work involved with keeping her property in the shape that it was in when we visited. She was able to recount visitors to the waterfalls also.

Saltz handles all of the attention the waterfalls get very well. Through her emails she transfers almost a welcoming feeling to this attention. She is very proud of the falls and the fact that people want to see them. “We love the fact that so many people appreciate our little paradise! …” She also enjoys the fact that many photographers are able to find the waterfalls as well; “A number of other photographers have asked permission to shoot our falls recently (one shot a model with a pinhole camera that he made out of a cigar box and a tin can, quite ingenious!…).” Her appreciation of the arts is very apparent when she mentioned this to Dig The Falls.

With a piece of property like this comes the responsibility to keep it in tact. Throughout a year’s time nature can be very destructive so Saltz and her husband work diligently in maintaining the property. She says that even the normal spring clean up is a large task, with all the Black Walnuts that fall each year (“three wheel barrows full”) and all of the leaves from the trees located all over her property and around her house. She also keeps up with the landscaping herself by trimming back all of her plants and mulching to keep the property looking neat.

In addition to all of this annual work Saltz has to contend with the destructive forces of nature. Wind storms, rain, and ice storms being some of the most destructive. “Lots of branches came down last week during the windstorm, so I have a lot of kindling bundles ready for the winter.” Being inventive with the messes caused by Mother Nature is an important aspect when owning a piece of land like this. Without it you could quickly drive yourself mad with all of the constant work.

Saltz went on to explain the waterfalls themselves as sometimes being destructive to the property.

“The waterfalls are beautiful, but also a living force of nature. Sometimes nature is very destructive; during storms, the water level can be scarily high and the roar of the falls is deafening. Over the course of several big storms, we experienced significant erosion of the lawn next to the middle waterfall, threatening our beautiful, huge willow tree. This necessitated an enormous, lengthy, and expensive retaining wall project alongside the northern edge of our property (we call it the ‘The Great Wall of Ina’!),” Saltz said.

To see the property now you would think the wall had been there for decades. The tree is now over 15 feet away from the creek and the lawn has all grown in to the point that you cannot tell where all of the erosion originally was. Not only did the wall save their tree, it also added to the overall aesthetics of the falls.

It was almost dizzying to hear all of the work Saltz and her husband had put into the land in the first couple years that they had owned it. The first of many projects was a set of stairs down to a sitting/swimming area across the street from her house. Her land is bordered by a large stream and a river that the stream empties into. These stairs had been built with a lot of planning and hard work. Rocks, logs and steel rebar were all used to create them.

“Nature’s force soon taught us a lesson: the first big storm destroyed many, many hours of our work, washing everything but the rebar away,” Saltz said. They ended up having to hire a contractor to build a concrete version of the stairs that they had spent so long building by hand. This was a very expensive, but necessary project.

At the top of the property, near the upper portion of the falls, Saltz created a fire pit and recreational area. Her and her husband spent weeks cleaning brush and hiring a contractor to clear out large logs and bushes too thick for them to take care of on their own. The top of the falls were overburdened with logs and debris that had floated downstream from previous storms. The contractor was tasked with cleaning this out as well. Another expensive but much-needed project. With all of this work completed they now had a private view of the upper most portion of the waterfall that they could enjoy and appreciate any time they wanted.

Saltz comments on the only times she cannot hear the waterfalls; “in the deepest part of winter, when the waterfalls freeze over. The middle waterfall (nearest the house) becomes a giant ice sculpture; though some water still moves underneath it, there is relative silence.”

Through her emails are conveyed a great appreciation and love of the land and a need for it to stay intact. Only a land owner can truly understand the feeling of accomplishment after great tasks have been completed like those mentioned above and also the feeling of great loss when you walk up on destruction of your land, caused by a person or even by nature.

The Great Animal Rescue Chase

The Great Animal Rescue Chase celebrates the art of animal rescue with a worldwide race to rescue one million. It’s a free event, open to all, and is perhaps the only global animal rescue event aimed at helping any animal in distress, anywhere in the world. Our ambition is to create a culture of enthusiasm and pride in animal activism. We believe in teaching, by example, that there is a hero in each of us just waiting to be unleashed. Empowered animal lovers can not only save lives, but build the momentum for powerful animal welfare reform.

The Harmony Fund

The Harmony Fund is a USA based 501(c)3 charity that sponsors some of the very best animal protection efforts around the world. We support projects that raise the standards of welfare for the pets in our lives, the animals on our farms and the wild things in the forest and the sea.

By donating to the Harmony Fund, you’ll help deliver financial support to highly effective organizations who demonstrate tremendous potential to benefit animals. Help us bring chained outdoor dogs into the heart of family life, provide spay/neuter education and free surgery for pets in low income communities, support programs that elevate the care of farm animals, provide habitat protection for wildlife and so much more. Thank you.

Information about posted and private property that everyone should know.

Recently my fiancé and I took a waterfalling excursion to the Hudson Valley Region.
The waterfall in question: Judd Falls.
The location: Cherry Valley.
The limiting factor: Trespassing… Or was it?

There were two possible ways to access this waterfall. One provided a small parking area and a well worn trail – obviously public access. The other access point could be reached by crossing a small un-posted field and walking through the woods – this spot was located directly across the road from a house, so it could have been private land. However, in our mind, the much better vantage point of this waterfall would have been seen by crossing this field and possibly trespassing.

We were out exploring for the day and had no real intentions of visiting any of the locals. After some debating we decided not to cross the field and just view the falls from the other side where it appeared that everyone else views them. Since the better vantage point for photographs was on the other side, we were a little disappointed, but knew the best choice was to play it safe and not trespass. Next time we go to this waterfall, we will be better prepared to visit the house across the street, and request permission of the potential land owner to access the field.

There is some confusion that takes place when someone says the phrases Posted, Private Property or No Trespassing. These phrases may draw to mind pictures of brightly colored signs nailed to trees or placed on a fence in front of property that has been obscured by thick bushes and brush. What they may not bring to mind is your next door neighbor’s home, your parent’s home or even your own property. One thing all of these places have in common is that they all share the same Trespass Law and they are all equally protected by it.

There are some additional regulations that you should be aware of that will be mentioned further into this article, but this specific law is the most important to note, for your own safety and for the land owners sanity.

Many times a person will trespass without realizing that they have done so or because they just weren’t paying attention to signage. This is not a gray area in the law where what you don’t know can’t hurt you. It is written out in very plain text that anyone that trespasses can get a fine of up to $250 and even up to 15 days in jail.

There are many reasons a land owner may post their property. It may be that they just feel that is the way things are supposed to be, since their family has always posted all of their land. It may be that they feel the only way to protect their rights as a land owner is to post the land. They also may have dealt with so many people trespassing on their land, littering, building campfires and destroying their property that they didn’t want to deal with it anymore. For whatever reason they post the signs because they have the right to do so.

These signs allow the land owner to expand on the rights given to them automatically by the state, by placing very specific language on their posted signs to further protect what people may or may not do while on their property (Hunting, fishing, trapping, etc.). The portion of the law that these other limitations are covered under is granted by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

There are people of all walks of life that own a piece of property that has a waterfall associated with it. Almost any waterfall you will find had an owner at one time. If it has not been donated to the National or State Park Services yet then it may still have a private owner. With this little fact in mind you need to remember that these are everyday people, who enjoy their privacy and like to be able to enjoy what they have worked hard to achieve.

One such land owner explains what brought him to the decision of posting his land. “The land was not posted when I acquired it. But after a while I got tired of picking up trash left by others; there was some vandalism (a “Please Cary Out Your Trash” sign was ripped off a tree), and numerous campfire spots annoyed me so I posted it.”

These types of stories are what ruin it for people like us at Dig The Falls, especially when our goal is to explore waterfalls, and then spread the word of their existence. These types of instances are not all that uncommon though, which is why at least 50% of all the waterfalls in New York State will never be published on the internet.

There are many spectrums of thought a land owner could fall in to. Dig The Falls was able to interview two landowners with very different ways of dealing with their land and the people that want to use it for their own recreational purposes. The first land owner is Scott Ensminger: author and waterfall enthusiast.
The second is Ina Saltz: author and professor.

Perspective One:

Scott Ensminger, a resident of North Tonawanda, New York, became interested in waterfalls due to his close proximity to Niagara Falls. He states that he has been interested in waterfalls his entire life and does not see that passion ever escaping him.

“I used to go to Niagara Falls quite a bit. But after a while it became somewhat artificial to me…” Ensminger said, commenting on all the commercial aspects that you expect to see at any amusement park, national monument and large city, all wrapped up into one big package. He was disillusioned by all of this commercialism so much that he actually began to research new falls to visit. “It was in the mid 1980’s that I started cataloging the ones I had seen in New York.”

At last count he had well over 1200 waterfalls listed with no end in sight.

Ensminger is also an avid hiker, spending his spare time exploring caves and star-gazing with his telescope. He has seen the area that he lives in develop before his eyes in the years since he was a young child, where he grew up with spacious meadow fields and large forest areas behind his house. Now it seems all but small portions of where he lives have been completely converted into residential neighborhoods.

Ensminger has had a bit of luck when he acquired a piece of land with a waterfall on it, but says that it is not easy to be an owner of such property. Since he acquired the property, he has had to post it due to all the littering, vandalism and misuse by visitors. He does however extend permission to almost everyone that contacts him about access to his property, citing that “It tells this person respects my rights to post the land and gives me some insight on the person’s character.” Not to mention the peace of mind in being able to monitor who is on his property.

Ensminger told Dig The Falls a story that should be set as an example of how not to greet a land owner if he happens to walk up to you while you have entered his land illegally: “I once came across two young women and a man who had built a small fire and were cooking hamburgers at the waterfall. I mentioned that they were trespassing on my land. One of the girls said, ‘Oh no we’re not; we’re not hunting or fishing. We’re just having a picnic by the falls’.”

With any land owner this would be a test in patience and fortitude. Fortunately enough, most land owners are well versed in their abilities to deal with many different types of personalities and can make these types of situations a good learning experience for the people involved.

Another situation Ensminger experienced concerned a young woman that he had walked up to while walking to his waterfall. She started by saying, “Isn’t this area and waterfall just beautiful?” She obvious had the ability to admire nature, but for whatever reason “she then opened a candy bar and tossed the wrapper on the ground. I (Ensminger) picked up the wrapper and said, ‘You dropped this.’ She said, ‘Oh, that’s trash’.”

But not every incident is a bad one. Unfortunately, though, it takes only a few to rile up a land owner before it is completely ruined for nature enthusiasts. In this case, Ensminger proves that not everyone is like the people mentioned above and everyone deserves a chance.

Ensminger suggests that if anyone is interested in waterfalls and would like to start hiking a bit more seriously they should start with public waterfalls, such as ones located at any State or National park. Niagara Falls, Letchworth State Park and Stony Brook State Park are just a few. This will acclimate the hiker to the various types of terrains and environments they can expect near a set of waterfalls. The park systems also have a very strict set of rules that new waterfall explorers can migrate over to any other waterfall they visit.

Ensminger was very adamant in insisting hikers ask land owners for permission to enter their property.

“Never walk across a planted field; walk around the edges. One owner in the Dansville area told me of witnessing two vans full of young adults cross his un-posted corn field when the corn was just a few inches high. ‘They flattened a path as wide as a sidewalk. That corn’s how I make my living’ (the farmer told Scott). Speaking with the landowner is the first and most important issue for any person who intends to visit a waterfall on private land, be it posted or not.”

Ensminger’s website www.Falzguy.com has many Western and Central New York waterfalls listed that are located on both private and public properties. He has put together this list of waterfalls out of a list of over 1000 that he has visited so far. Most of the 1000 falls have been left off the site at the request of the land owners. These requests will always be respected by any true outdoorsman.

This waterfall is located on the Hudson River near where the Mohawk River joins both rivers in Cohoes/Watervliet.

The waterfall is classified as a cascade, but is very pretty none the less. At peak flow the cascade can barely be made out from the turbulent rapids of the river, but during normal flow offers up a very nice scenic view from Peebles Island.

Below are some links to show a small sampling of one of the trail systems within the park. There are miles to choose from!

Wintergreen park is located in the town of Canajoharie and contains within it’s bounds several very picturesque waterfalls. Most are shorter and a couple do not produce very much flow during the coarse of the year.

The main waterfall attraction, Canajoharie Falls, is very impressive though. You can only safely visit this waterfall from a platform built above it on the cliffs edge. The waterfall is a great place to visit while in the area and the park offers a lot of activities during your stay.

You can gain access to the Canajoharie Creek from the lower parking area of the park and walk down to the crest of the waterfall. The rock is very slippery though. Many people are rescued out of the gorge every year because of minor and major injuries.

The bottom of the falls is located on posted lands, so access to that are is not permitted. (*The photos shown here were taken with proper permission from the appropriate town officials.*)

The Facts:

Here are the cold hard facts you will need to know when you set off to visit your next waterfall, and any other consequent set of falls. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (NYDEC) has a wonderful page full of questions and answers that will cover almost all of the questions left in your mind after reading this article. You can find it here: Posting Information For Landowners And Hunters

I have listed a couple of the highlights of the page below. These are directly taken from the web site mentioned above. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION!

Posting Information for Landowners and Hunters:

About Posting

Q. What is posting under the Environmental Conservation Law?
A. People who want to control access to their property without personally seeing everyone who enters may post signs warning people to keep out. This may be done with simple “Keep Out” signs under the Penal Law, but for rural properties with many possible points of entry, a few signs may not be effective. Where activities such as hunting, fishing and trapping are concerned, the Environmental Conservation Law provides more specific guidelines which make posting more effective.

Q. Must I post to keep people off my property?
A. No. Trespassing is illegal even on unposted property, unless it is unimproved, apparently unused and unfenced (or not otherwise enclosed to exclude intruders.) Even on vacant land, a written notice delivered in person (or by certified mail with a signed receipt, etc.) to any person, in the name of the landowner or authorized party, containing a description of the premises and a warning of restrictions which apply has the same effect, for that person, as if the land were posted with those restrictions. Likewise, anyone asked to leave the premises, posted or not, by the landowner, occupant or other authorized person, must do so immediately.

Use of Posted Property – Making Exceptions

Q. Is written permission from the person posting necessary?
A. No, but written permission bars prosecution of trespass. Some landowners find written permission a convenient way to get to know guests, and to keep track of them. They write simple notes or make homemade forms. DEC also provides free blank Landowner Permission Record forms for granting permission.
Click here to download the “Ask Permission Slip”
*(26kb pdf)??ASK Permission stickers, a brochure explaining the program, Landowner Permission forms, and information about fish and wildlife conservation are available free from DEC regional Wildlife offices, or NYSDEC, Albany, NY 12233-4754

Money and Liability

Q. Is posting required to protect landowners from liability?
A. No. Whether the property is posted or not, the General Obligations Law protects landowners from liability for non-paying recreationalists on their property. Because of this protection, recreational liability lawsuits against rural landowners are uncommon. Recreational activities covered include: hunting; fishing; organized gleaning (picking); canoeing; boating; trapping; hiking; cross-country skiing; tobogganing; sledding; speleological (caving) activities; horseback riding; bicycle riding; hang gliding; motorized vehicle operation for recreation; snowmobiling; non-commercial wood cutting or gathering; and dog training. This protection does not apply in cases of willful or malicious failure to guard or warn against dangers.

Q. May the owner or lessee charge for hunting, fishing, or trapping on the posted property?
A. Yes, but charging for access removes the liability protection granted to the landowner by the General Obligations Law. To learn more about landowner liability see the link for Cornell University’s publication “Recreational Access and Owner Liability” under Offsite Links in the right hand column at the top of this page.

Enforcement

Q. Is it an offense to trespass on areas posted against trespass pursuant to the Environmental Conservation law?
A. Yes, it is a violation, punishable by a fine up to $250 and/or up to 15 days in jail.

Q. Is it illegal to tear down someone else’s posted sign?
A. Yes. A person who, while hunting, fishing, or trapping, damages property, posted signs, livestock or other property can be assessed damages, as determined by the court in addition to the penalties described above.

Q. How should the owner or lessee of posted property go about prosecuting a person for trespass?
A. If they witnessed the trespass, they should write down as much information as possible to assist the police in identifying the person. They should then contact an Environmental Conservation Officer or any other police officer for assistance. Environmental Conservation Officers make arrest for, and prosecute trespass, particularly if it relates to hunting, fishing, trapping, or disturbing wildlife.

Turn In Poachers & Polluters – Call 1-800-TIPP-DEC

While it may seem as though these laws essentially remove all the rights to a hiker wanting to gain access to any given property, it does not. In fact, the law was created to foster the responsible enjoyment of any given property. Use these laws as a tool in deciding how you spend time enjoying the outdoors. You may find that you pay more attention to your surroundings and what you can do to improve them. And that is a good thing!

Knowing these laws also grants you the responsibility of informing others of them. If you can inform two other people and they inform another two people then, in time, these laws will help create a cleaner, safer outdoors experience for everyone.

This waterfall has no true name, but is located within the cemetery grounds, so the nick-name has been given with that in mind.

There are a couple smaller waterfalls upstream from the main road side fall, but they require a bit if bushwhacking to get to. While hiking to these waterfalls pay close attention to the scenery around you. There are some very old mausoleums and grave stones located along the way.

This waterfall is very picturesque and can be visited year round, but is low during the summer and can freeze over during the winter.

Unlike Akron Falls, this is a man made structure that is located downstream from the main waterfall, but still within the park’s trail system.

Walking downstream from the main falls you will notice an older cement bridge that towers over the creek. almost underneath of the bridge is located a dam that is about 10′ high and spans the entire creek.

Agers Falls is located roadside as you travel across a bridge that spans the Moose River. At 18′ in height, the falls are small, but pack a lot of personality into the area they encompass.

The Waterfall has been used for industrial purposes in the past, but is relatively free running at this point in time.

Whether you are a continued supporter of Dig The Falls or are a new visitor, welcome!!

Since it’s inception in 2005 Dig The Falls has undergone many changes in appearance and focus. At first DTF offered up an informational site pertaining only to waterfalls: “Promoting New York State Waterfalls and Nature!”. This original site was put together in hopes of furthering the knowledge of all of New York State’s waterfalls.

2010 marked a big point for DTF. This was not only the fifth year of it’s online presence, but also the year we introduced user profiles and the ability of users to freely upload any data that was pertinent to the DTF site. At this time we also decided to expand the purpose of DTF to “Promoting New York State Waterfalls, Nature and now more than ever!”

In making this decision we took on a lot more responsibility to our members and also a lot more work to make sure our content was clean and safe from spammers and hackers. Unfortunately at the end of 2011 we made the decision to move away from this platform.

After many hours of keeping track of our spammer friends it was decided that we could only further the efforts of DTF by offering a different type of site. A public site with the ability to contact us directly and comment, when signed in.

This was a difficult, but much needed decision since it will dictate where DTF goes in the future. We investigated numerous types of mapping websites and POI solutions and were able to find this solution. It fit more closely to the original design ideas at inception than any other to this point.

This site is not unique to its design, although the features and content built into this site is what does make it unique from any other on the web. When we are done loading all of our collective data to the new DTF platform we will have the most comprehensive outdoor guides for New York State available.

Please “Contact Us” if you should have any suggestions, questions, concerns or you would like to find out more about us.

PS – The new site also allows any visitor to donate to Dig The Falls. This donation goes toward present and future additions to the site as well as keeping the site funded in order to stay on line.
If you like what we have been doing here at Dig The Falls, please donate to help further our future efforts. We greatly appreciate your support!

Akron Falls is located in Akron Falls Town Park, on Murder Creek. It is the main attraction within the town park, but not the only one worth investigating.

On entering the park, depending on which entrance you use, You will have the opportunity to drive past a beautiful grotto or a historic bridge with a small damn underneath. In either case you can easily locate the lower parking areas and start your hike to the waterfall from there.

The hike is short, but very pretty. There are plenty of signs pointing the way to the falls viewing area. Some people choose to wade up the creek to the bottom of the falls, but it is not suggested during high waters.

Caution: On other websites you may find mention of another waterfall in close proximity to the main Fall. The waterfall mentioned is strictly off limits to the public and is heavily posted for your protection. Heed the warning signs as many people have been injured due to the nature of these falls.

Rattlesnake Gulf is located within Adams Eden Camp, a privately owned camp that encompasses several other waterfalls.

The camp is actually located at the end of County Road 256, near the top of the gully. The marker on this map shows the bottom of the gully.

All of the southern rim of the gully is posted to an extreme. Adams Eden Camp owners have closed down some of the more attractive areas of the gulf due to the posting and at the behest of the surrounding land owners.

With several other waterfalls located on the property it is still a very nice place to visit.
