Buttermilk Falls in Arietta is one of the best-known waterfalls with one of the most commonly used names. The falls are formed on the Raquette River before it empties into Long Lake. Standing at over 40 feet at its tallest, water flows and drops over a series of small ledges on this broad waterfall before flowing over its signature large boulder at the bottom.
You will find plenty of space for picnics and walk along the river. Please avoid entering the water at the top of the falls as the tumultuous waters are quite dangerous, having claimed lives in the past.
While visiting this area, be sure to stop by Hoss’s Country Corner just down the road in Long Lake. They have a great selection of the book, decorations for the home, clothing, and outdoor gear. Further, up route 30 you find ADK Trading Post, a great place to go to refuel your body with soups, sandwiches, and more including the best paninis this side of the Adirondacks!
Another great opportunity in Long Lake is a scenic flight with Helms Aero Service. Fly over the High Peaks in a seaplane and experience the Adirondacks from a different view! And if you’re looking to spend the night or have dinner, the Adirondack Hotel is the place!
To get there: GPS: 43°54.890’N 74°29.047’W – Coming from the South on Rte 30, look for a sharp turn in the road to the right. At this turn, there will be a road leading to the left called North Point Rd. There will also be a sign for Buttermilk Falls. Follow North Point Road approximately 2.1 miles until you come upon a large parking area for the falls. Follow the short trail into the fall.
This waterfall can be found in the Adirondack Waterfall Guide by Russell Dunn.
