The Ithaca and Watkins Glen areas are two treasure troves full of waterfalls. State Parks and Natural Areas are home to countless waterfalls that have formed in the hundreds of gorges throughout the areas which are only a half-hour apart, making this a perfect roadtrip!
The phrase “Ithaca is Gorges!” is tribute to the multitude of gorges found there. The most notable waterfall here would be Ithaca Falls, found in the Ithaca Falls Natural Area.
Watkins Glen State Park is known for its iconic view of Rainbow Falls with the stone bridge as a backdrop. Each year tens-of-thousands of visitors come to this park, which itself is home to nineteen (19) waterfalls, to walk the 400-ft deep gorge beneath its towering walls.
Taughannock Falls is the centerpiece to Taughannock Falls State Park. This waterfall plunges 215 feet into a gorge whose walls tower 400 feet.

Although this list is short with only nine locations, it is packed full of waterfalls. Each area has a number of waterfalls and hiking trails so you will definitely need more than just one day to take them all in! Some parks have swimming in the natural waterways, and other activities such as camping, fishing, areas for cookouts, playgrounds, and pools!
We recommend getting an Empire Pass from New York State Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation if planning on visiting multiple state parks during the year.
