Twists and turns of Auger Falls!
Auger Falls is formed on the Sacandaga River and the primary fall stands prominently at 40ft with a rocky outcrop splitting the flow of water. The waterfall comprises of three major drops totaling over 100′ which are all viewable on trails that run the length of the creek around the falls area. It gets its name from early visitors who noted that the gorge had the appearance of being drilled out with an auger.
The trails are not well marked for the direction of travel, so it is important to keep track of where you are and have been. If all else fails, you can follow the trails upstream which will eventually lead to the far end of the parking area.
Getting there – From Wells, drive north on Rte 30 and you will see the intersection of Rte 30 and Rte 8. From there continue to proceed north on Rte 30 for approximately 1.7 miles where you will see a dirt road leading down to a parking area on the right. This can be easy to miss so take your time when near. From the parking area, on foot, follow the dirt road that runs alongside Rte 30 for one-tenth of a mile and you will see the trail leading into the woods and a trail register. The 0.3 miles, the yellow blazed trail to the falls takes you through a scenic forest setting with a number of opportunities for photos.
