Rocky Falls

Rocky Falls

Rocky Falls is a 6–8-foot-high waterfall formed on Indian Pass Brook—a medium-sized stream that rises from Scott Pond and flows into the West Branch of the Ausable River north of Heart Lake. The waterfall is contained in a miniature chasm surrounded by much-exposed bedrock. Its name comes from the rubble of rock surrounding the swimming hole at the base of the fall. Like a number of other Adirondack waterfalls, including Bushnell, Indian, and Rainbow, Rocky Falls is formed in a dike where the less resistant rock was eroded out by the action of the stream.

During the days of Adirondack logging, a lumber camp named Hennessy’s operated nearby.
As a point of interest, the Indian Pass Trail that you are hiking on to Rocky Falls was earlier used by Henry Van Hoevenberg in 1903 to escape from a fire that had consumed the area. Van Hoevenberg barely made it out alive, having delayed his departure from the Adirondack Loj until the very last moment.

To get there: GPS: 44°10.329’N 73°59.926’W – From Heart Lake: From Heart Lake, follow the red-blazed trail as it goes around the north end of the lake and then heads southwest. At 2.1 miles, you will see a spur path to your right that takes you quickly west to the Rocky Falls Lean-to and waterfall [44°10.317’N 73°59.950’W]. – Russell Dunn
