The Wilmington Flume – Wilmington

Wilmington Flume

The Wilmington Flume

The Wilmington Flume consists of three distinct waterfalls on the Ausable River’s West branch. One, that can be viewed from roadside and river-side and two others that are visible from a trail on the opposite side of the first falls. At the third falls, there is a swimming hole flanked by steep walls. Altogether, the Flume Falls add up to approximately 60 feet in height over the course of 200 yards.

To get there: GPS: 44°21.994’N 73°50.416’W – Follow Rte 86 From Lake Placid for approximately 6.3 miles and look for the second bridge that crosses the West Branch of the Ausable River. Immediately after the bridge, there is a parking area on the left for the Flume trails. This area will take you to the first falls. Crossing over Rte 86, you will see a trail that leads to the other two falls.

****Although the Flume is known for being a great go-to swimming hole in the warmer months, it should be noted that numerous drowning fatalities have occurred here. Swimming should not be attempted in times of high water as the water becomes aerated and you will lose the ability to gain resistance to bring yourself to the surface due to the amount of air bubbles in the water.****
