Dugway Falls, Brimstone Falls or Sulfur Falls… You smell it and decide for yourself…

Dugway Falls has many names, but one of the more adequate nick-names is Brimstone Falls due to the abundance of sulfur and other minerals in the spring water fed stream flowing over the 35′ waterfall. At times the sulfur smell can be overwhelming for the un-expecting visitor.

It is said that there are three major springs, each containing a unique mixture of minerals very different from one another, that feed the stream that flows through the historic spa town of Sharon Springs. For many years the springs were used by the local bathhouses claiming each water had its own healing nature depending on what patrons hailed from.

Dugway Falls can be found on the outskirts of Sharon Springs, heading North on Main Street. You could pass by it if you are not careful, but it is easily found since it is so close to where the stream passes under Main St. You will need to park on the side of the road, so care will need to be taken with local traffic. There is access to the top of the falls and the bottom can be accessed by climbing down the steep bank.

The photo is of a small portion of the creek bottom. The waterfall can be difficult to capture in a photo, but is very rewarding when accomplished!
