Explore the waterfalls of Christman Sanctuary
Christman Sanctuary in Duanesburg, NY is a 120-acre preserve protected by The Nature Conservancy and open to the public year-round. While the preserve is known for the 30-foot waterfall, Bozenkill Falls, there are two miles of trails for hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.
Bozenkill Falls is the star waterfall attraction, but there are also many other smaller, picturesque waterfalls along the blue trail which parallels Bozenkill Creek. To get Bozenkill Falls, follow the blue trail to the junction of the yellow trail and continue on the yellow trail until you reach the falls. There is also a lean-to there for shelter.
The .8-mile blue trail loops from the parking area, along the creek, and back the parking area. The small yellow trail leads to the falls and also a memorial dedicated to Will Christman and his wife. Christman devoted his life to farming, nature writing, poetry and seeing his farm transformed into a nature sanctuary. The 1.1mile orange trail crosses the creek at a junction with the blue trail and leads out to a large field where his plantations can be found. Note that in times of high water, the creek may not be traversable.
As you explore these trails, keep an eye out for various wildlife and flora. In the Summer you’ll find the creek to be teeming with crawfish and a number of newts on the trail.
The site is a Registered National Historic Landmark listed by the New York State Historic Trust.
