MacIntyre Falls
MacIntyre Brook Falls is a 15-foot-high, seasonal cascade formed on MacIntyre Brook—a small stream that rises from the north shoulder of Wright Peak (4,587’), and flows into the West Branch of the Ausable River. In Exploring the Adirondack 46 High Peaks (1996), James R. Burnside writes “Just beyond, the curve of a protruding rock wall amplifies the sound of a stairstep waterfall coming into view.”
The brook and nearby mountain range are named for Archibald MacIntyre (McIntyre was how he spelled it), a state comptroller who co-founded the Elba Iron & Steel Manufacturing Company at North Elba and the iron mining operation at Tahawus in the 1830s.
A photograph taken of the waterfall by James Swedberg can be seen in the 13th edition of the ADK’s Adirondack Trails: High Peaks Region (2004). Due to MacIntyre Brook Fall’s trailside location and the popularity of Algonquin Peak (5,115’) and Wright Peak, it is probably one of the more frequently seen waterfalls in the Adirondacks.
To get there from Heart Lake: From Heart Lake, follow the blue-blazed Van Hoevenberg Trail south for 1.0 mile. When you come to a junction, continue straight ahead on the yellow-blazed Algonquin Trail and proceed southwest for 1.5 miles, or a total of ~2.5 miles. MacIntyre Brook Falls is to your left, just upstream on a small creek crossed by the trail [~44°09.561’N 73°58.784’W]. A designated campsite lies nearby. – Russell Dunn
